Philippines asks the United States for Temporary Protected Status

In the wake of Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated the Philippines over a month ago, the Philippines has formally requested that the U.S. government designate the country under Temporary Protected Status (TPS). A TPS designation would provide temporary immigration relief to certain eligible Filipino nationals in the U.S.

If granted, eligible Filipino noncitizens in the U.S. would join other individuals from countries such as El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua and Honduras in being able to apply for temporary immigration relief, allowing them to live and work lawfully in the United States while their country recovers. As with other TPS designated countries, however, the benefit is only temporary, as once the Philippines recovers, beneficiaries would have to return home.

If TPS for the Philippines is approved, there will likely be only a limited timeframe in which eligible Filipinos can apply. If you believe you might qualify for this potential benefit, pay close attention to the news and follow the updates on this blog to make sure you do not miss any deadlines. We will continue to post updates here.
